Pioneer 10 calls home on birthday. NASA re-establishes contact with the space probe exactly 30 years after launch – it is now 11.9 billion kilometres away [New Scientist]

Wow! 30 years!!! They just don’t build ‘em like that anymore… Although they couldn’t anyway because the greenies won’t let them use nuclear propulsion!

I just saw this announcement recently. Where is this going to end???

America’s new bomb.. As heavy as a Volkswagen, these “thermobaric” bombs are designed to suck the oxygen out of a cave or tunnel, killing even earthworms deep underground. Though the blasts are believed capable as well of wrecking sensitive equipment and destroying chemical weapons beyond the reach of conventional bombs, they are designed to leave the subterranean structure intact so it can later be searched. I just looked at the date of my last entry to this site and didn’t realise how much time had passed since it was done. The reason being is that I’ve been trying to take it pretty easy and get as much rest out of my evenings as I can in order to shake the last remnants of this bug that’s been troubling me. I’m not sure what it is but head colds, as opposed to stomach bugs, seem to just drag on and on… it’s beginning to get a tad annoying….

And in other news, we finally have a good, cheap, local supply of fresh meat here in Mt Hagen! The Christian Leaders’ Training College (CLTC) has got an abattoir up and running. From what I have been hearing over the last year or so this has been in the planning stages, but has never gotten off of the ground – until now.

CLTC already sell fresh eggs and day-old chickens to help cover their running costs. This abattoir will help them even more and also meet a real need around Mt Hagen.

Well, my peace of the last eight months is about to come to an end. That’s right, Brandon, my housemate, returns to Mt Hagen tomorrow on the 5PM flight from Port Moresby.

Guess what? An event happened today that we’ve all been waiting for for quite awhile… give up? Well, Bonifas started working with me today!

He arrived in Hagen on Saturday afternoon and started working today. He’s still waiting on some of his stuff to be flown up from Lae, but the main thing is that he’s here. I tried to keep today reasonably relaxed and low-key – I don’t want to burn him out too quickly!!!

Well, we didn’t end up having a bible study, but a worship/prayer/sharing time. It was awesome! These are the times when I thank God for bringing me to this place, for allowing me to share these times with these people and for bringing people like this into my life. I am always amazed at how the simplest times of fellowship are the best – just a bunch of His children gathering together, informally, to praise Him and support each other…

I haven’t got much too say tonight, other than we’re restarting our weekly compound bible study later this evening, which’ll be good.

Work wise things are going pretty good: Bonifas, my soon-to-be assistant, is due to arrive in Hagen this week. I’m really looking forward to him starting (and not just so I can leave sooner!) as I’ve always got so much to do.

Brandon, my housemate-on-the-loose is (possibly) due back at the end of next week. He’ll be bringing back lots of “toys” with which to keep everyone entertained; of that I’m sure!

Tonight I got invited to dinner over at Pierre and Esther’s, after which we watched Shrek on DVD. It was their first viewing and my second. It was almost as entertaining as the first time around. It’s just one of those movies where there always seems to be some little thing which you missed the first time. A very pleasant end to the weekend!

Last night, a bunch of us went out for dinner to the Highlander Hotel. It was Nels’ birthday last Sunday, so we thought it would be an excuse for a night out.  We also invited the Duncalfe’s along as a thank-you for all the Thursday night meals they’ve graciously provided for all of us. It was a fun night and the food was very good, with very generous helpings.
